Media Console and Cable Organization Ideas for the TV Wall

A practical system for labeling cables so you're not tracing wires blind, hiding cords without hiring an electrician, zoning console storage between open shelves and closed doors, and keeping streaming gear from cooking itself in a sealed cabinet.

Every TV wall has the same design flaw: it’s the one spot in the house where four or five devices need power and internet at once, and none of them were built with the others in mind. A soundbar, a streaming box, a game console, maybe a router, all trailing cords toward the same two outlets. Nobody plans this. It just accumulates, cable by cable, until reaching behind the console to unplug anything feels like digging through a drawer of tangled headphones. Label every cable before you forget which one is which

The single most useful thing you can do to a media console costs about four dollars: label the cables. Not with a system so elaborate you’ll abandon it, just enough that you’re not tracing a black cord through a bundle of six identical black cords when the game console needs to move to a different HDMI port.

Cut a strip of masking tape or use a roll of cable labels, wrap it around each cord near the plug end, and write what it connects, not what it is. “PS5 to TV” tells you more than “HDMI 3” ever will, because you already know which device is the PlayStation – what you won’t remember six months later is which port you put it in. Label both ends of long runs too, since a cable disappearing into a wall or under a rug is exactly the kind you’ll need to identify without pulling the whole thing out.

If you’d rather skip the handwriting, cable tag kits with pre-printed icons for TV, router, and game console hold up better over time than tape does. Either way, do it once, while everything is unplugged for a cleaning pass. Hiding the cords: what’s free and what’s worth paying for

Cable management runs on a spectrum from free to expensive, and most rooms never need to go past the cheap end.

Free or nearly free

Binder clips screwed or stuck to the back edge of the console hold cords in a row instead of a pile – thread each cable through the metal loop and it stops sliding onto the floor. Zip ties bundle the cords running together toward the same outlet, turning six loose wires into one manageable rope. Between the two, you’ll solve most of the visible mess for under ten dollars.

A small investment

Cord covers – the flat, paintable plastic raceways that stick to a wall or baseboard – carry cables from the console up to a wall-mounted TV without them dangling in open air. Paint one to match the wall and it disappears from three feet away. Expect to spend fifteen to thirty dollars for enough length to cover one TV wall.

The real investment: in-wall channels

An in-wall cable management kit – a pair of recessed plates with a channel behind the drywall – gets every cord fully out of sight between a mounted TV and the console below it. This is worth doing if you’re already opening the wall to mount the TV bracket anyway. One caveat that actually matters: those kits are rated for low-voltage cables like HDMI, optical audio, and speaker wire, not for standard power cords. Building and electrical codes generally prohibit running a regular extension cord or power strip cable inside a wall cavity, since it isn’t rated for that kind of enclosed, poorly ventilated space and becomes a fire risk. If the TV needs power at the top of the wall, that calls for an outlet installed there, not a cord fished through the channel alongside everything else.

Sort the console into what you see and what you don’t

A media console works best divided into two zones, not treated as one long shelf. Open shelving – the section without doors – should hold whatever needs a clear line of sight to a remote: the cable box, a soundbar with its own remote, anything with an infrared sensor a closed door would block. Closed cabinets are for the stuff nobody needs to see or point a remote at: the game console once it’s paired to a controller, disc players, controller charging docks, and the loose pile of HDMI switches and adapters every household somehow accumulates. Baskets inside the cabinet keep controllers and cables from becoming their own tangle once the door shuts – a shallow bin per console works better than one deep bin everything gets thrown into. In a smaller living room where the console doubles as the only storage furniture, stretching that cabinet space further matters even more.

Put the power strip somewhere you can actually reach it

The surge protector is usually the first thing installed and the last thing anyone thinks about placement for, which is why it ends up wedged behind the console facing the wall, unreachable without moving furniture. Mount it instead to the inside back panel of the console with its own adhesive strips, switch side facing out, so turning the whole system off before a storm is one motion instead of an excavation.

Buy one with individually switched outlets if more than one high-draw device shares it, so a console left in standby isn’t drawing power all night just because the router next to it needs to stay on. And give the strip some room to breathe – jamming it into a closed cabinet with zero airflow around a device that’s already generating heat is a bad pairing twice over.

Don’t forget the gear needs to breathe

A closed cabinet that hides cables beautifully can also cook a game console slowly over a few years. Streaming boxes and consoles vent heat out the back or sides, and a snug-fitting cabinet door with no gap traps that heat right where the dust already collects. Leave at least an inch of clearance around the back and sides of anything that runs hot, and if the console has solid doors, drill a few holes in the back panel or buy one built with a ventilated back to begin with.

Dust is the other cost of an enclosed console: it collects faster in a warm, low-airflow cabinet than it does out in the open, and it’s the dust, not the heat alone, that eventually clogs a fan and shortens the device’s life. Vacuum the back panel and the port area every few months with a brush attachment, and you’ll get years more out of equipment that would otherwise fail from neglect, not use.
