Under-Sink Bathroom Storage Ideas for the Cabinet With the Pipes in the Way

The under-sink cabinet fails one way: the pipe eats the space you planned around. Here's how to measure it, work around it, and avoid the mildew trap.

The under-sink cabinet is the one storage space in your house designed by a plumber first and a homeowner second. Every other cabinet is a rectangle. This one has a P-trap crossing it at an angle, a shutoff valve sticking out at knee height, and sometimes a garbage disposal wiring box bolted to the side wall. Buy an organizer bin because it looked good in a photo and it will not fit, because nobody photographing bins for a catalog had to work around your pipe.

Measure around the pipe before you buy anything

Open the doors, take everything out, and get a tape measure on the actual obstruction before you shop. You need four numbers: the height from the cabinet floor to the bottom of the P-trap, the width of clear space on the left of the pipe, the width of clear space on the right, and the depth from the door to the back wall. Most people only measure the cabinet opening and end up with a bin that’s 2 inches too tall to slide past the trap.

Write the numbers down on your phone before you leave the house. A cabinet that’s 22 inches wide might only give you 8 usable inches on one side of the pipe and 11 on the other, once you account for the curve of the trap. That asymmetry is the whole reason generic bins fail here: they assume a clean rectangle, and you don’t have one.

Check the shutoff valves too. If the handles stick out more than an inch from the wall, any shelf or drawer you install needs a notch or a gap at that exact height, not just around the pipe.

Storage systems actually designed for a center pipe

Once you have real measurements, look for systems built specifically to split around plumbing rather than sit on top of it.

The better wire and plastic stacking racks come with a U-shaped notch in the back rail that slides around the trap, letting you use the full width of the cabinet instead of losing everything behind the pipe. These run $15 to $30 and are the single best fix for the “dead zone behind the plumbing” problem. Confirm the notch depth against your measurements first, since a lot of listing photos show the cutout from an angle that hides how shallow it actually is.

Pull-out drawers on a base plate instead of a full tray

A pull-out drawer that spans the entire cabinet floor will hit the pipe and jam on the first try. What actually works is a drawer system mounted on two independent base rails, one on each side of the pipe, so each side glides on its own track. You lose the ability to have one giant drawer, but you gain two drawers that fully extend, which means you can see what’s in the back without kneeling on the tile and reaching blind.

Lazy Susans for the back corners

The corners behind the pipe are the hardest square footage in the cabinet to use, and a turntable solves that specific problem better than any drawer. A 9-inch half-moon lazy Susan tucked into the back corner, spun to face forward when you need it, holds the bottles you use maybe twice a month, spare toothbrushes, backup floss. Don’t put anything you need daily back there. Daily items belong up front where you don’t have to spin anything to reach them.

Tension rod shelf hacks that cost about ten dollars

If you’re not ready to buy a full system, two tension rods and a bit of patience get you real extra storage this weekend. Install one rod horizontally near the top of the cabinet, an inch or two below the underside of the sink basin, and hang spray bottles from it by their trigger handles. This clears the entire floor of the cabinet for bins.

The second trick uses a rod vertically, wedged between the cabinet floor and the underside of the countertop, right up against the pipe. Slide flat items like a hair straightener or a small cleaning caddy against that rod and it acts as a divider, stopping things from sliding into the plumbing every time you open the door. Neither of these requires drilling, and both come out in five minutes if you move.

The one thing to skip is any tension rod system marketed as a full shelf, the kind with a flat platform that spans rod to rod. Under a bathroom sink, that flat surface just becomes a shelf that traps water dripping off the pipe joints, and now you’ve built a mildew tray instead of a storage solution.

The moisture and mildew risk that’s actually worth worrying about

This cabinet is genuinely different from your kitchen cabinets in one important way: it sits directly under an active water supply and drain line, in the most humid room in the house. Slow leaks at the supply valve or trap fittings are common and often invisible until the cabinet floor is already swollen or the bin you stored has gone furry on the bottom.

Check the fittings monthly, not yearly. Run a dry paper towel along the underside of the trap and around both shutoff valves. If it comes back damp, you have a leak worth calling a plumber about, not a coincidence. Swollen or dark particleboard on the cabinet floor is not cosmetic, it means moisture has already been sitting there long enough to do damage.

Skip fabric-lined bins and cardboard boxes entirely in this cabinet. They wick moisture up from the floor and hold it against whatever’s inside. Solid plastic or metal bins with a lifted base, or an actual shelf that keeps items off the cabinet floor, are worth the extra few dollars. A cheap moisture absorber canister, the kind sold for closets, is a reasonable five-dollar insurance policy for this specific cabinet, since it’s one of the few spots in the house where damp air is a daily near-certainty rather than a seasonal one.

What should never live under a bathroom sink

Some categories don’t belong in this cabinet regardless of how well you organize it, because heat, humidity, and proximity to kids or pets make them a bad fit here specifically.

Medications, including anything in your first-aid kit, degrade faster in humid conditions and should live somewhere dry, ideally the medicine cabinet or a closet shelf, not down here. Any electrical item with a cord, like a curling iron that’s still hot when you put it away, is a burn and fire risk in an enclosed, poorly ventilated space. Bleach and ammonia-based cleaners stored side by side is a mistake people make in every room of the house, but it’s worse here because the cabinet is small and sealed, so any accidental mixing has nowhere to vent. Keep those two categories of cleaner on opposite sides of the cabinet at minimum, ideally in different rooms entirely.

Anything with a paper label, spare toilet paper, cotton rounds, tissue boxes, will absorb ambient moisture over months and either soften or grow spots you don’t want to think about. If you must store paper goods down here, they need to be in a sealed plastic bin, not just sitting loose on a shelf.

Get the measurements right, pick hardware built around the pipe instead of ignoring it, and treat the moisture risk as routine maintenance rather than an afterthought. That’s the whole difference between an under-sink cabinet that works and one you dread opening.
