The floor of a garage is spoken for. The car needs it, or the bikes do, or the lawnmower does, and every bin you set down there is something you’ll trip over in the dark. The walls, meanwhile, sit empty from the light switch to the ceiling joists, doing absolutely nothing except holding up the roof. That’s the real estate you should be fighting over, not the four square feet by the door where the recycling bin lives. Pegboard vs slat wall vs French cleat

These three get lumped together, but they solve different problems and cost different amounts of money.

Pegboard is cheap, forgiving, and everywhere. A 4×8 sheet of 1/4-inch tempered hardboard runs $15 to $25, and the hole pattern (holes on 1-inch centers) accepts a huge range of hooks, bins, and clips off any hardware store shelf. The catch is weight: standard pegboard hooks handle a few pounds each, and the board itself bows or pulls loose if you hang anything heavier than hand tools on it. It’s built for hammers, pliers, and paint brushes, not a 40-pound miter saw.

Slat wall is what retail stores use, and it shows: horizontal grooved panels that accept brackets anywhere along their length instead of only at fixed hole positions. That flexibility costs more, usually $30 to $60 per 4×8 panel, and it’s less forgiving to install since panels need to sit flush and level or the brackets won’t seat right. Where it earns its keep is holding awkward shapes and heavier loads than pegboard, since the bracket engages the whole groove rather than one thin peg hole.

French cleat is the one serious garage people end up loving. Two angled strips of wood, one on the wall and one on the back of whatever you’re hanging, interlock and let gravity do the securing. No proprietary hardware, no fixed hole spacing, and a cleat built from 3/4-inch plywood strips can hold a genuinely heavy shelf, cabinet, or shop vac without flexing. It’s also the most labor-intensive to set up, since you’re ripping your own cleat strips and mounting a full rail rather than screwing up a single sheet. A quick way to decide

If it’s under 5 pounds and you own more than three of them, pegboard. If it’s oddly shaped, heavier, or lives on a bracket you’ll want to reposition often, slat wall. If it’s genuinely heavy or you rearrange your whole layout more than once a year, French cleat.

This is the one system in this whole article that costs nothing and takes an afternoon. Hang your tools on the pegboard where you want them to live, then trace around each one with a paint marker or a fine-point Sharpie directly on the board. Fill the outline in with spray paint if you want it to actually be visible from across the garage.

The reason this works isn’t decoration, it’s friction. A blank pegboard with fifty identical hooks gives you zero information about where the rubber mallet goes, so it ends up wherever there’s an open hook, which is nowhere reliable. A traced outline turns “put this away” into “match the shape” — a task your brain does automatically instead of one it has to think about. It also outs a missing tool at a glance: an empty silhouette means something’s still on a workbench, or in someone else’s garage.

Do this for wrenches, pliers, hand saws, clamps, anything with a hook already assigned. Skip it for consumables and small stuff that lives in bins instead. The same logic works on the bench itself, where a few workbench tool storage setups keep tools from drifting back onto the work surface.

What belongs on a wall, and what doesn’t

Not everything that fits on a hook should go on one. The honest dividing line is weight and how badly it would hurt to have it fall.

Good wall candidates: hand tools, extension cords coiled on a hook, folding chairs, rakes and shovels, bikes on a vertical hook, small bins of hardware, a shop broom. A pegboard hook or slat wall bracket rated for 10-25 pounds handles these without drama, and nothing gets crushed if one falls.

Bad wall candidates unless you’ve built for it specifically: totes of holiday decorations, a car battery, a wall-mounted workbench meant to bear your body weight, a bike rack holding more than one adult bike, anything over about 30 pounds. These need a rated system tied into studs, not a drywall hook and hope. A gallon of paint doesn’t seem heavy until it’s the fourth one on the same anchor and the whole cluster peels off the wall at 11pm.

The general rule: if you’d be annoyed to trip over it, it can probably hang. If you’d be hurt by it landing on your foot, it needs a stud, a cleat rail, or a shelf bracket rated well past what you think you need.

The garden tool problem

Rakes, shovels, hoes and brooms are the worst-behaved category in any garage because they’re long, top-heavy, and shaped like nothing else you own. Leaned in a corner, they slide, fall, and eventually just live on the floor, which puts them right back in the space your car needs.

The fix is a dedicated long-handle rack, not a general hook. Look for wall brackets built with a wide U-shaped or spring-clip opening sized for handle diameters around 1 to 1.5 inches, mounted in a horizontal row at shoulder height. Spacing brackets 4 to 6 inches apart lets you slot four or five tools side by side without them clattering together every time you pull one out. A cheaper version: two long screw-in hooks a foot apart, angled slightly upward, with the tool head resting between them. Not elegant, costs about $4, keeps a shovel off the floor.

Whatever you choose, mount it low enough that the heaviest end (the metal head) sits at or below the bracket, not dangling above it. A rake stored head-up and handle-down is far more likely to slide free than one hung the other way.

Installation basics: anchors are not enough

Drywall anchors are rated for drywall, which is to say almost nothing. The plastic expanding kind from a hardware store multipack top out around 20-25 pounds per anchor in good drywall, and that number drops fast if the wall has any moisture damage, which garage walls often do. For hand tools on pegboard that’s usually fine, especially since a full sheet is also screwed into studs at its corners, not floating on anchors alone.

For anything heavier, find the studs. Garage walls are almost always 16 inches on center, and a stud finder or the knock-and-listen method gets you there. Mount a ledger board, French cleat rail, or slat wall panel edge directly into studs with 3-inch deck screws, and everything hung from that rail inherits the strength of the framing instead of the drywall. The single most common mistake in garage wall projects: buying an expensive slat wall system, then screwing it into drywall alone because the studs didn’t line up conveniently. Measure first, then choose panel widths and hook positions that hit at least two, ideally three, studs.

If your garage has exposed studs with no drywall at all, you’ve got it easy: screw cleats or ledger strips straight into the framing wherever you want them, no anchors, no guessing, no weight limit worth worrying about short of the wood itself.
